An Amy Winehouse biopic is on the way thanks to “Harlots” executive producers Alison Owen and Debra Hayward. Their production outfit, Monumental Pictures, signed a deal with the family of the late soul singer to make a feature based on her life. Proceeds from the film will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation and the Winehouse family are set to serve as exec producers on the project, according to The Guardian.
The “Rehab” singer’s father, Mitch, said that the family had been approached multiple times about a biopic, but “the time was not right.” He explained, “We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent. And we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues.”
Launched in 2011, the Amy Winehouse Foundation offers support and information about drug and alcohol misuse. Its namesake died from alcohol poisoning earlier that year at the age of 27. The Grammy winner released her final studio album, “Back to Black,” in 2006.
Winehouse was the subject of “Amy,” an Oscar-winning 2015 documentary.
The source notes that “Owen and Hayward affirmed their commitment to telling the stories of ‘amazing women, both real and fictional.'” Between them, their credits include the “Bridget Jones” franchise, “Suffragette,” “Me Before You,” “Jane Eyre,” and “Elizabeth.”
“We’re proud that Mitch Winehouse has entrusted us with the story of amazing Amy, an icon whose songs have provided the soundtrack to a generation,” Owen and Hayward said in a statement.
