Amy Ziering and Kirby Dick are set to investigate the ugly side of the beauty industry. Deadline report that HBO Max has greenlit “Not So Pretty,” a four-episode half-hour docuseries from the “On the Record” filmmakers.

Currently in production, “Not So Pretty” will “bring awareness to the lurking dangers in the commodities we all use every day without question for makeup, skin-care, nails, and hair, marking the first-ever comprehensive large-scale investigative expose of the trillion-dollar cosmetics, beauty, and personal care industry, according to producers,” the source details. “Dick and Ziering will take the ‘industry to task via rigorous investigations, incisive wit, and emotional storytelling to inform audiences of the hidden hazards of and safe, budget-friendly alternatives for their daily products.'”

Ziering and Dick are among the project’s exec producers and will direct.

“Not So Pretty is a landmark exposé that will both captivate and educate viewers,” said Jennifer O’Connell, executive vice president, original non-fiction and kids programming, HBO Max. “Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering are masters of investigative storytelling and prime to reveal the unknown threats that affect us all. This series gives us the opportunity to spark change and arm consumers with the knowledge needed to make smarter personal care choices. ”

Ziering and Dick’s last project, “On the Record,” was released earlier this year on HBO Max. The doc followed music exec Drew Dixon in the early weeks of the #MeToo movement, chronicling her decision to go public and accuse Def Jam Recordings co-founder Russell Simmons of raping her. “On the Record” also spotlights other women who have accused Simmons of sexual misconduct, including Sil Lai Abrams, Sheri Hines, Jenny Lumet, and Alexia Norton Jones. Ziering and Dick have collaborated on several films, including “The Invisible War” and “The Hunting Ground,” both of which examine rape culture. The former focuses on the U.S. military and the latter on college campuses across the U.S. “The Invisible War” won two Emmys and received an Oscar nod. “The Hunting Ground” won an Emmy and scored an Oscar nod for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song for Lady Gaga and Diane Warren’s “Til It Happens to You.”
