Ana Lily Amirpour is kicking off principal photography on “Blood Moon” next month. The fantasy tells the story of a girl with strange and dangerous abilities. Now word comes that she’s signed on to helm yet another genre pic with a female protagonist. The Iranian-American filmmaker is bringing a female-led reboot of action thriller “Cliffhanger” to the big screen. A press release announced that Rocket Science has acquired the rights to the feature and will produce alongside Original Film, best known for “The Fast and the Furious” franchise.

Released in 1993, the original “Cliffhanger” stars Sylvester Stallone and tells the story of a heist that goes awry mid-air, resulting in suitcases full of cash landing throughout the Rocky Mountains.

Casting is currently underway for the reboot’s female lead.

“I am very excited to partner with Original Films and Rocket Science, who share my passion for the character-driven high-adrenaline survival movie; one of my favorite genres,” said Amirpour. “We are setting out to create a thrill-ride on the mountain which taps into the primal side of an action movie, where you see what a person is capable of doing to survive in the most extreme situations, pushed to the limits. Add to that some high-stakes espionage and a badass female mountain climber as the lead and it becomes a truly epic reinvention of what made the original ‘Cliffhanger’ movie so fun and so thrilling.”

Amirpour’s critically acclaimed feature debut, vampire story “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” was released in 2014 to rave reviews. Her 2016 follow-up, desert dystopia “The Bad Batch,” won the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival. On the small screen, she’s directed episodes of “Legion” and “Castle Rock,” and recently helmed the pilot for “Briarpatch,” an upcoming USA Network series starring Rosario Dawson as a D.C. investigator determined to hunt down her sister’s killer.
