Andrea Riseborough will soon have another thriller under her belt. The star of “Nancy” and “Black Mirror’s” “Crocodile” is attached to lead “Geechee,” the supernatural story of a scientist who is haunted by her new home’s history. The project made Deadline’s 2019 list of buzzy AFM market debuts.
“Geechee” hails from writer-director Dubois Ashong (“Where the Water Runs”) and sees Riseborough portraying Wren, a New York scientist who relocates to Sea Islands off the Atlantic Coast with her son. “She quickly falls in love with the land and the people on the secluded island, but soon her world starts to unravel as the souls of the subjugated begin to haunt her dreams and her waking life,” per Deadline.
AGC Studios is financing and producing. Filming is expected to kick off early next year.
You can catch Riseborough next in “The Grudge,” out January 3. A reboot of the 2004 Sarah Michelle Gellar-starrer of the same name and the Japanese movie that inspired it, “Ju-On: The Grudge,” the horror pic is set in a home cursed by a vengeful spirit. Riseborough also appears in Lone Scherfig’s “The Kindness of Strangers,” which hits theaters in Germany December 12. No word on a U.S. release for the ensemble drama.
The actress won a BIFA for her lead performance in “Shadow Dancer.” “Battle of the Sexes,” “Birdman,” and “The Death of Stalin” are among her other credits.
