Angelina Jolie Will Direct Biopic About War Photographer Don McCullin

Angelina Jolie has lined up her next project. The Oscar-winning actress, whose last directorial effort, Khmer Rouge drama “First They Killed My Father,” received a Golden Globe nod, will helm “Unreasonable Behaviour,” a biopic of British war photographer Don McCullin. Variety confirmed the news.

Based on McCullin’s book of the same name, the film will “be an account of the celebrated British war photographer’s life, which took him from poverty-stricken, wartime London to some of the world’s most dangerous war zones,” the source details.

“I am humbled to have a chance to bring Don McCullin’s life to film,” said Jolie. “I was drawn to his unique combination of fearlessness and humanity – his absolute commitment to witnessing the truth of war, and his empathy and respect for those who suffer its consequences. We hope to make a film that is as uncompromising as Don’s photography, about the extraordinary people and events he witnessed, and the rise and fall of a unique era in journalism.”

McCullin added, “Having viewed Angelina’s last film on Cambodia (and having spent so much time during the war there) I was very impressed at how she made such a powerful and accurate representation of the place at that time. I feel as if I am in safe, capable, and professional hands with her.”

“First They Killed My Father,” Jolie’s adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung’s memoir of the same name, received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language and a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Film Not in the English Language. Her other directing credits include “By the Sea,” “Unbroken,” and “In the Land of Blood and Honey.”

Jolie won an Oscar in 2000 for her supporting role in “Girl, Interrupted” and received a nom in 2009 for her leading role in “Changeling.” A Special Envoy to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Jolie accepted the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2014 Oscars.

“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil” and “The One and Only Ivan” are among Jolie’s recent acting credits. Her latest film, “Come Away,” was released last week. Directed by Brenda Chapman, the fantasy pic reimagines the titular characters of “Peter Pan” and “Alice in Wonderland” as siblings.

Jolie’s upcoming projects include Chloé Zhao’s “The Eternals,” a Marvel pic about a race of immortal beings who have lived among humans throughout history. It is slated to hit theaters November 5, 2021.
