Angelina Jolie’s ‘By the Sea’ the First Woman-Directed Film to Open AFI Fest in At Least a Decade

“By the Sea,” Angelina Jolie’s third narrative feature as a director, will open this year’s AFI Fest (November 5–12). The drama about a husband and wife (played by Jolie Pit and her husband Brad Pitt) trying one last time to salvage their broken marriage while on vacation will be the first woman-helmed opener at the festival in at least a decade.

The November 5 screening will be the film’s world premiere and will likely kick off the Universal release’s award-season stump.

The festival’s full line-up will be announced in October.

“By the Sea” is slated to open November 13.
