“Beast Mode” has found its lead. Tony winner Anika Noni Rose is stepping into the ring as legendary boxing trainer Marsha Blackstone for the TNT pilot, the network announced in a press release. The “Quad” actress is also serving as co-executive producer on the project.
Inspired by Blackstone’s life, “Beast Mode” sees its lead “pulling herself and her two daughters up from poverty, abuse, homelessness, and criminality.” “Marsha Blackstone reached the pinnacle of boxing as a fighter and has become equally as successful a trainer known for unconventional methods and a fiercely combative style,” the show’s synopsis details.”Driven by the belief that any step backward is a slippery slope to her former life, when the boxer Marsha trained to a world title fires her, this complex and inspiring woman is determined to find a new fighter to eclipse the one she lost, but her emotional baggage and militant style could be her undoing in her professional and personal life, especially with her two grown daughters, and a new baby on the way.”
Tina Mabry, whose credits include the 2009 feature “Mississippi Damned” as well as episodes of “Queen Sugar” and “Black Jesus,” is attached to direct the pilot.
“Power,” “Everything, Everything,” and “The Good Wife” are among Rose’s credits. She voiced the role of Princess Tiana in “The Princess and the Frog.” Also a Broadway star, Rose won a Tony Award for “Caroline, or Change,” and a received a nod for “A Raisin In the Sun.”
Rose expressed interest in producing in a New York Times profile published earlier this year. “I’d like to be able to put my filter on the story, put my lens on it,” she explained “Who can I bring along with me? How can I bring women to the forefront? How can I show us just living — just moving through life and growing?” she said. “Being knocked over by the wind and picking ourselves up? How many ways can I do that?”
