The world premiere of Hong Kong director Ann Hui’s The Golden Era will close the 71st Venice Film Festival (August 27-September 6). It will be screened out of competition.
The Golden Era centers on the woman writer Xiao Hong, who wrote short stories, memoirs, and journalistic accounts of Japanese imperialism in China. She died in 1942 at the age of 30.
Hui will also head the Horizons jury at Venice, which focuses on debut films and new trends in cinema.
Her last film, A Simple Life, competed at the 2011 Venice Film Festival and won four prizes there. The first female recipient of a lifetime achievement honor at the Asian Film Awards, Hui is an important figure in the Hong Kong New Wave.
