Anna D. Shapiro Takes Over as Steppenwolf Artistic Director from Martha Lavey

Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre Company will pass the torch from one female artistic director to another next year when Anna D. Shapiro takes over the position that Martha Lavey has occupied for two decades.

Shapiro is a much-sought and Tony-winning director at the Steppenwolf and on Broadway, having overseen productions of August: Osage County, Of Mice and Men, This is Our Youth, and the upcoming Fish in the Dark with Larry David. She is also an artistic associate and ensemble member at the Stepepnwolf.

Lavey will leave behind a legacy as a champion of new playwrights, such as Tracy Letts, Bruce Norris, and Lisa D’Amour, as well as of emerging directors, including Shapiro. Her tenure will conclude at the end of the 2014–15 season.
