Anna D. Shapiro to Direct “The Devil Wears Prada” Broadway Musical

Shapiro: Frank Ishman

Miranda Priestly’s legendary barbs are coming to the stage. Already a best-selling novel and blockbuster film, “The Devil Wears Prada” is headed to Broadway, and Anna D. Shapiro will steer the ship. A press release announced that the Tony Award winner has signed on to direct the upcoming musical with music by Sir Elton John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, and book by Paul Rudnick.

The artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Shapiro won a Tony in 2008 for directing “August: Osage County” on Broadway. She also received a nod in 2011 for directing “The Motherfucker with the Hat.” Her other credits include “Larry David’s Fish in the Dark,” “Straight White Men,” and “Of Mice and Men.”

“I am truly honored to be a part of this incredible project. Working with Shaina, Paul, and Sir Elton has already proven to be one of the great thrills of my career, and I look forward to bringing Lauren’s beloved world to the stage,” said Shapiro.

Published in 2003, Lauren Weisberger’s “The Devil Wears Prada” tells the story of Andy Sachs, an aspiring writer who lands a job at the world’s foremost fashion magazine. Ignorant and judgmental about the world of fashion and woefully unprepared for the gig, Andy ends up working as an assistant for Miranda Priestly, the mag’s famously demanding Editor-in-Chief.

A film adaptation of the novel starring Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep was released in 2006 and grossed more than $326 million worldwide.

No word on casting or when to expect the musical just yet.
