“Transparent” alumna Annabel Oakes will offer a fresh spin on the “Summer Nights” of yore. She’s been tapped to write the pilot for “Grease: Rydell High,” HBO Max’s musical series based on the 1978 Olivia Newton-John-starrer. Deadline broke the news.
Described as a “‘Grease’ offshoot,” the project, which received a straight-to-series order, is set in and around the world of Rydell High. The show “reimagines the global smash hit movie with familiar as well as new characters,” the source details. “Still the 1950s, ‘Rydell High’ will feature big musical numbers from the period combined with new original songs and will tackle the peer pressures of high school, the horrors of puberty, and the rollercoaster of life.”
Oakes, who is also among “Grease: Rydell High’s” exec producers, recently wrote and directed YouTube pilot “The Edge of Seventeen,” based on Kelly Fremon Craig’s 2016 coming-of-age pic of the same name. Her other credits include “Atypical,” “Awkward.,” and “I’m Sorry.”
