After winning an Oscar for playing the doomed Fantine in Les Misérables two years ago, Anne Hathaway will delve even deeper into her theatre roots by starring in Grounded, a one-woman play about a fighter pilot forced out of duty when she becomes pregnant.
Directed by Tony winner Julie Taymor (The Lion King), the 70-minute monologue finds its protagonist now tasked with operating drone strikes. “Grounded is brilliant and important play, a meditation on the human and moral costs of our astonishing military technology,” said the Public Theater’s Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. “This promises to be an unforgettable theatrical event, and an important addition to our national conversation.”
Grounded will debut at the Public on April 7 and run until May 17.
Hathaway will next appear in writer-director Kate Barker-Froyland’s Brooklyn romance Song One, which opens in theaters and on VOD January 23. Last fall, Taymor’s stage adaptation of The Lion King became the highest-grossing work of any media in entertainment history.
