Get ready to hear Anne spin another yarn. Prince Edward Island’s most beloved fictional resident is sticking around the small screen. Netflix and Canadian broadcaster CBC have renewed “Anne With an E” for a third season, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.
A loose adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s classic “Anne of Green Gables” novels, the series offers a darker take on the triumphs and tragedies of Anne Shirley (Amybeth McNulty, “Morgan”), a motor-mouthed orphan with imagination to spare. Anne is mistakenly sent to live with a middle-aged sister (Geraldine James, “Sherlock Holmes” franchise) and brother (R.H. Thomson, “Chloe”) who wanted a boy to help them work on the farm. While Anne is not at all who they were expecting, the pair grudgingly come to accept and embrace her.
“Anne With an E’s” second season dropped just over a month ago on Netflix. Season 3 is expected to kick off production this winter and will premiere later in 2019.
“Through the storytelling of ‘Anne With an E,’ the classic Canadian tale has transcended borders and found fans across our global membership,” said Cindy Holland, vp original content at Netflix. “We are excited to continue our partnership with CBC and Northwood and bring the series back for a third season.”
Showrunner and creator Moira Walley-Beckett added, “Our beloved Anne will be 16 years old when we return to this season full of romantic complications, bold adventures, and dramatic discoveries. I will explore important, contemporary themes that I hope will continue to resonate with, and inspire and uplift, our audience.”
According to THR, the coming-of-age story’s third season “will introduce characters and stories that will tackle issues including identity, feminism, bullying, and gender parity.”
Walley-Beckett’s other credits include “Breaking Bad,” “Flesh and Bone,” and “Pan Am.” She won three Emmy Awards for writing and producing the former.
“Anne With an E’s” 10-episode second season was 50 percent women-directed. Niki Caro (“The Zookeeper’s Wife”) helmed the show’s pilot, for which she won a DGA Award.
