First published in 1815, “Emma” continues to resonate. Jane Austen’s novel about a meddlesome matchmaker is once again being adapted for the screen. Deadline reports that “Split’s” Anya Taylor-Joy will play the titular role in a feature for Focus. It was also just announced that Paramount is working on a reboot of “Clueless,” Amy Heckerling’s 1995 teen comedy inspired by the classic novel.
Focus’ take on “Emma” will be helmed by Autumn De Wilde, marking her feature directorial debut. The photographer and director has collaborated with Jenny Lewis and Beck on a number of music videos, and helmed the 2016 short “The Postman Dreams.” Eleanor Catton (“The Luminaries”) is penning the script.
Taylor-Joy, who broke out with 2015’s “The Witch,” is also set to star in “The Sea Change,” Kristin Scott Thomas’ directorial debut. The film follows a couple whose relationship takes an unexpected turn while they’re visiting a remote Greek island.
“Most of the women not only that I’ve been lucky enough to play but that I’ve read [in scripts I’ve received] are quite complex, messy, interesting human beings — but then again I shouldn’t be the anomaly here, I should be the norm. Definitely, whenever I’ve got a girlfriend role, I’ve sent it back being like ‘Eh? Why?’” Taylor-Joy has said. “I’m excited for this era of women that we are stepping into right now where people understand that everyone’s a person and they’ve all got a lot more going on underneath the surface than you might originally think.”
Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Beckinsale, and Romolo Garai are among the actresses who have toplined “Emma” adaptations.
