If you are — or know — a teen girl who dreams of following in the footsteps of Patty Jenkins, Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, and other female directors, take note. Aspiring filmmakers don’t have to wait until after high school to start building their career. Reese Witherspoon and her production company, Hello Sunshine, are teaming up with AT&T to launch an initiative with the goal of increasing the number of women working behind the camera in Hollywood. Produced by Fresh Films, The AT&T Hello Sunshine Filmmaker Lab is now accepting applications.
“This summer, 20 teenage girls will spend eight days in Los Angeles filming a TV show under the guidance of mentors and professional creators, including some from AT&T and Hello Sunshine,” the Lab’s website reveals. “Participants in this program will gain experience in video production by creating a TV show from the ground up! Also, program participants will learn from women leaders making positive change within the film and digital video industries.”
The deadline to apply is June 10.
The application process involves — but is not limited t0 — creating a 90-second video explaining why you want to be a part of the program and learn to tell stories through filmmaking.
No experience is necessary and the program is free. You can find more details and apply via the Lab’s website.
Witherspoon can currently be seen in DuVernay’s fantasy epic “A Wrinkle in Time.” She just won an Emmy for producing “Big Little Lies.” The murder mystery is returning for a second season on HBO, but a premiere date hasn’t been announced. Andrea Arnold will direct every episode of the upcoming season, and Meryl Streep has been added to the cast.
Check out a video Witherspoon posted about the Lab below. “I believe every young woman has a story to tell,” the Oscar winner says.
