London’s Barbican Cinema will be closed until June 30 due to the coronavirus, but that isn’t stopping the arts venue from supporting up-and-coming film curators. The Barbican is launching an online Emerging Film Curators Lab “in a bid to widen the range of voices and perspectives” across its programming, Screen Daily reports.
The initiative is now accepting proposals for fall 2020 public screenings at the Barbican. Ten projects will be shortlisted to take part in the digital lab, which will include group and one-on-one online sessions over a few days at the end of May.
Four projects will be selected for development, and presented at the venue this autumn.
The Emerging Film Curators Lab is looking for “film curators (individuals, or collectives of up to three people) from a range of backgrounds and contexts, with limited programming experience,” per the Barbican’s website, “who are interested in developing socially engaged, inclusive film events, to form part of [the program] ‘Inside Out‘: a year exploring the relationship between our inner lives and creativity.”
Eligible projects will include a film screening with an additional live element, and must last no longer than two hours and 30 minutes.
“Our aim is to provide career development opportunities to emerging curatorial talent, as well as opening up the Barbican program to a wider range of voices and perspectives, enriching the offer to existing and new audiences,” Barbican’s head of cinema, Gali Gold, told Screen. “This is part of the Barbican’s wider commitment to artist and talent development.”
She added, “It’s important to stress that this is an open call. Equal consideration will be given to those without a degree or institutional affiliation who demonstrate a high level of creativity, critical thought, and other potential in their respective fields.”
Applications for the Emerging Film Curators Lab will be accepted through April 30. Find more information on the Barbican’s website.
