Apply Now: Field of Vision and Topic Studios’ Documentary Freelancer Relief Fund

If you’re a freelancer in the documentary field and have been struggling due to the coronavirus crisis, Field of Vision and Topic Studios may be able to help. The orgs have partnered to create a $250,000 relief fund for freelance documentary filmmakers, crew, critics/journalists, publicists and more.

“The fund will distribute unrestricted grants of up to $2,000 to support living costs to freelancers who have experienced financial hardship from loss of income or opportunity due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the fund’s application form details.

In order to be considered, applicants must demonstrate freelance work within the doc field as directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, sound recordists/designers, researchers, assistants, critics/writers, publicists, or other roles. Applicants should provide a link that showcases their professional work, such as an IMDb page, a film review, or a direct link to a project.

Also, applicants must include a description of their current employment situation, explain what the funding will be used for, and list the maximum and minimum funding amount they’re hoping to receive.

Currently enrolled students and people who are currently employed are not eligible for the Documentary Freelancer Relief Fund. International artists are welcome to apply, but must be able to receive funds electronically. Priority will be given to countries and regions where there isn’t government assistance for freelancers. If you are not eligible for government assistance, be sure to note that in the application.

Applications for the May round of funding will be accepted until Friday, May 8, at 6 p.m. ET or until the fund receives 750 applications, whichever comes first. Applications for the final round of funding will be accepted from 9 a.m. ET June 10 to 6 p.m. ET June 12, or until 500 applications are received.

Selected applicants will be notified within 20 days of the fund closing. Payments will be processed within 30 days of notification.

Note: If you have already applied to the fund, you do not need to apply again. All entries will be considered throughout each round. Please don’t apply twice.

Head over to Field of Vision’s website for more information on the Documentary Freelancer Relief Fund. The application form can be found here.
