Apply Now: Ghetto Film School’s AT&T Mentorship Content Lab

Participants will pitch their shorts to panelists including Lena Waithe: Ghetto Film School

Los Angeles teens with filmmaking aspirations, this one’s for you. Nonprofit filmmaking program Ghetto Film School is now accepting applications for its AT&T Mentorship Content Lab, which will see 10 filmmakers, ages 14-18, pitching short films to the likes of Emmy winner Lena Waithe.

Taking place September 14-December 12, the AT&T Mentorship Content Lab will give 10 LA-based teens the chance to pitch a four to five-minute non-dialogue short film to Waithe, who is serving as Lead Mentor, and a panel of creative executives. One pitch will be selected for production, which all 10 Content Lab Fellows “will collaboratively cast, shoot, and edit.” The final product will be “a visually captivating and emotionally impactful short film.”

Along the way, participants will receive hands-on production training from Ghetto Film School and networking opportunities courtesy of AT&T. The finished short will screen at the AT&T Mentorship Content Lab Premiere Event, with all 10 Fellows attending.

Last fall Ghetto Film School and Women in Film LA teamed up for an initiative providing six young WOC directors year-long mentorship and master classes. The program’s mentors included “Late Night” director Nisha Ganatra, “Empire” writer-producer Wendy Calhoun, and “Mad Men” alumna Jessica Paré.

Waithe became the first black woman to win a comedy writing Emmy in 2017. She nabbed the prize for penning “Master of None’s” “Thanksgiving” episode. She created Showtime drama “The Chi” and has a BET comedy on the way. Waithe also wrote the script for Melina Matsoukas’ “Queen & Slim.” The drama about a black couple who goes on the run after killing a white cop in self-defense hits theaters November 27. You can see her next in Season 3 of “Westworld,” expected in 2020.

The deadline to apply to the AT&T Mentorship Content Lab is September 5. You can find more information on Ghetto Film School’s website.
