Apply Now: Reese Witherspoon’s LitUp Fellowship for Underrepresented Women Writers

Witherspoon in "Big Little Lies": HBO

Reese Witherspoon is broadening her support for women writers. The Reese’s Book Club founder and star-producer of “Little Fires Everywhere,” “Wild,” “Gone Girl,” and “Big Little Lies” — all of which were adapted from books penned by women — has unveiled LitUp, a fellowship for underrepresented women writers.

LitUp will offer five emerging scribes an all-expenses-paid retreat, three months of mentorship with a published author, and marketing support from Reese’s Book Club.

“As our community and reach continues to grow, we have all collectively sought out innovative ways to create real change and leave an indelible mark on the greater reading community,” Witherspoon stated, per Variety. “We know there are so many powerful stories from undiscovered voices, and now, more than ever, we need to hear them. We are so thrilled that LitUp will serve as a launchpad for a new generation of authors and provide them with the necessary tools and resources to forge formidable careers as storytellers.”

In order to be eligible for LitUp, candidates should be unagented, unpublished, and identify as diverse — i.e. as BIPOC, LGBTQIA, living with a disability, and/or from an ethnic, cultural, or religious minority.

Candidates must submit an original adult or young adult fiction manuscript centering on a woman and written in English. Applications must also include a synopsis of the work and responses to short essay questions.

Witherspoon won an Oscar for her performance in “Walk the Line” and received a nomination for “Wild.” She won the Outstanding Limited Series Emmy for exec producing “Big Little Lies.” You can catch her next in Season 2 of Apple TV+’s “The Morning Show,” which is expected later this year. Delia Owens’ “Where the Crawdads Sing” is among the Reese’s Book Club titles set to be adapted for the big screen and produced by Witherspoon.

Head over to the Reese’s Book Club website to learn more about LitUp or to apply. Applications are due May 30.
