ARRAY Releasing Acquires Shantrelle P. Lewis Doc “In Our Mothers’ Gardens”

Lewis: ARRAY

“In Our Mothers’ Gardens” is joining the ARRAY family. Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Releasing has acquired Shantrelle P. Lewis’ feature film debut with plans to release the doc in select theaters and on Netflix beginning May 6, a press release announced.

Described as a celebration of “the strength and resiliency of Black women and Black families through the complex, and often times humorous, relationship between mothers and daughters,” the film premiered at the 2020 BlackStar Film Festival, where it took home the Shine Award for Best Film.

“In Our Mothers’ Gardens” “pays homage to Black maternal ancestors while examining the immediate and critical importance of self-care, and the healing tools necessary for Black communities to thrive,” according to its official synopsis.

The doc includes interviews with #MeToo founder Tarana Burke and cultural critic Dr. Brittney Cooper of Rutgers University, among others.

“‘In Our Mothers’ Gardens’ is a beautiful tribute to the complex relationships between Black women connected by lineage and love,” said Tilane Jones, President of ARRAY. “Released in celebration of Mother’s Day, we are honored to present Ms. Lewis’ feature debut highlighting important bonds between daughters, mothers, and grandmothers told by a dynamic group of women.”

ARRAY Releasing’s other titles include Shaz Bennett’s “Alaska is a Drag” and Deepa Mehta’s “Funny Boy.” The former is a coming-of-age story that explores the fluidity of gender identity and the latter is set in ’70s and ’80s Sri Lanka and depicts its protagonist’s sexual awakening.
