“Black Beauty” is getting another update. Ashley Avis has signed on to write and direct the latest adaptation of Anna Sewell’s classic novel about the titular horse, Deadline has revealed. Bolt Pictures and Constantin Film are producing.
Published in 1877, Sewell’s book is told from Black Beauty’s perspective and traces his journey from farm colt to hansom cab horse. Avis’ version will “center on Jo Green, a teenager who recently lost her parents, who is sent to live with her uncle at a horse and animal sanctuary on Long Island. She eventually bonds with the wild Black Beauty, who was similarly taken away from her family when her mustang herd was captured in the West.” The new “Black Beauty’s” themes are expected to parallel those of Sewell’s novel — animal welfare, empathy, and compassion — while “bringing them into a modern light.”
“Black Beauty” has been adapted for film and TV several times before, including a 1994 movie from writer-director Caroline Thompson.
Avis’ feature credits include “The Trouble with Mistletoe” and “Deserted.” Her latest film, troubled teen romance “Adolescence,” is expected to hit theaters this fall. “The Cynical Life of Harper Hall” and “Premium Cali” are among her TV credits.
