Attagirl, a film lab supporting women and non-binary writers, directors, and producers, has selected the projects for its inaugural edition. A press release announced that 13 films have been chosen, and over half are directed by women and people of color. The lab, from For Film’s Sake (FFS), kicked off its first workshop September 10.
Over 10 months, Attagirl will help its filmmakers find and create production and distribution strategies for their projects. The first workshop, supported by TIFF’s Share Her Journey campaign and taking place through September 19, will feature “bespoke project development as well as content integrated from TIFF’s Industry Conference and digital festival.”
The remainder of the lab will include two other workshops, one of which will be championed by Sydney Film Festival. Attagirl focuses “on the crafting of innovative story, audience, and marketplace strategies aiming to overcome the challenges within an increasingly digitally-focused single market,” the press release describes. “Teams of producers, directors, and writers are paired with experienced Project Mentors who, over the course of the three intensives, work alongside Script, Audience, and Financial consultants to craft innovative strategies for financing and release of the selected films.”
“As an independent filmmaker and a woman of color creator, I know first-hand the difficulty in finding and securing investment for independent film, especially in distribution,” said Frances-Anne Soloman, writer-director of Attagirl selectee “Claudia.” “We can’t wait to participate in Attagirl and build a pipeline of industrial and audience support for our film from development through to distribution.”
Set during the 1958 race riots in London, “Claudia” sees its titular character, a Trinidad-born U.S. deportee, trying to unite Black and white communities through a party-turned-street festival.
Other Attagirl projects include Zoe Pepper’s “Fads & Miracles,” the story of a mother, a daughter, and the teacher who changes everything, and Abbesi Akhamie’s “In My Father’s House,” which follows a young woman reuniting with her estranged father in Nigeria. “Bruja,” from Nora Unkel and Michele Garza Cervera, is a portrait of a woman who turns to a dark family power to free herself and others from the horrors of human trafficking.
“The arrival of streamers has radically changed audience behavior however the pathways to production and release are yet to catch up. The quantity, quality, and diversity of applications we received is a testament to the work of global agencies and organizations in driving new voices and perspectives to screen production,” emphasized Sophie Mathisen, FFS Executive Director. “It is also a clear signal to the industry that new pipelines are vitally needed to support talent in finding pathways to production and release, ensuring that cinema continues to evolve to reflect audiences as and where they are.”
