Augustine Frizzell is taking audiences on another drug-fueled adventure. The “Never Goin’ Back” writer-director has signed on to helm “Stoned Alone” for Fox, an R-rated take on the studio’s beloved home invasion comedy starring Macaulay Culkin. Ryan Reynolds will star in and produce the pic. Deadline broke the news.
“Stoned Alone” follows “a twenty-something weed growing loser who misses the plane for his holiday ski trip. He makes the best of things by getting high. Paranoia sets in and he believes he hears someone break into his house. Turns out thieves have broken in. Fully stoned and fueled by paranoia, he tries to thwart the thieves and defend his castle,” the source summarizes.
Frizzell’s feature debut, “Never Goin’ Back,” premiered at Sundance in January and hits theaters August 3. The Texas-set comedy follows a couple of days in the lives of high school dropouts and best friends who dream of taking time off from their serving jobs to go to a beach. One of the pic’s funniest scenes sees the girls accidentally eating pot-filled food and heading to work stoned out of their minds.
“Surround yourself with supportive people who respect your vision and will help you achieve it,” Frizzell urged when we asked her advice for other women directors. “Filmmaking is a team effort and if you have teammates who think that because you’re a woman, every decision you make needs to be double checked or second guessed, then you’re going to be butting heads the whole time and the end product will suffer. Also, if you have to, fight for what you want! It’s your vision — make sure you get it.”
Frizzell is attached to direct the pilot of “Euphoria,” an upcoming HBO teen drama starring Zendaya (“Spider Man-Homecoming”).
