Ava DuVernay to Be Honored with PEN America’s Voice of Influence Award

DuVernay in "Half the Picture"

A well-deserved honor is coming Ava DuVernay’s way. The Emmy-nominated “When They See Us” creator is set to receive Pen America’s Voice of Influence Award. Deadline broke the news.

“We are honored to recognize the unparalleled work that Ava DuVernay has done throughout her career, which constantly reminds us of the true purpose and power of storytelling,” said Michelle Franke, executive director of PEN America’s Los Angeles office. “We admire the rigor with which her work has explored the lesser-heard, all-too-often suppressed voices of history. PEN America is proud to stand with leaders like Ava, who challenge and inspire us, and whose contributions further our mission to protect and celebrate creative expression and who use their words to transform the world.”

DuVernay will take home the award at PEN America’s 2019 LitFest Gala on November 1 in Beverly Hills.

“When They See Us,” a Netflix series inspired by the so-called “Central Park Five,” is up for a whopping 16 Emmy Awards, including writing and directing nods for DuVernay, who made her narrative feature debut with 2010’s “I Will Follow.” She made history as the first black woman to win the Best Director prize at Sundance for her follow-up, 2012’s “Middle of Nowhere.” Her other credits include Oscar Best Picture nominee “Selma,” Oscar-nominated doc “13th,” and an adaptation of the beloved fantasy novel “A Wrinkle in Time.”

The “Queen Sugar” creator has a non-profit film collective, ARRAY, focused on films by people of color and women, and has been vocal in the push for more inclusivity behind the scenes and onscreen. “Activism is inherently a creative endeavor — it takes a radical imagination to be an activist, to envision a world that is not there,” DuVernay has proclaimed. “It takes imagination and that’s not far from art.”
