Ava DuVernay’s Next Picture to be Hurricane Katrina Drama with Star David Oyelowo

Ava DuVernay has lined up her follow-up to Selma.

The ascendant filmmaker will collaborate with Selma star David Oyelowo for the third time in an untitled love story and murder mystery set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina. The director and actor also previously worked together on the indie Middle of Nowhere, which earned DuVernay a Best Director award at Sundance and was finally released on DVD on January 13, 2015.

DuVernay will write and direct the new film and produce alongside Oyelowo. They will team up with Participant Media, which distributed the $200,000-budgeted Middle of Nowhere.

“Hurricane Katrina is one of the most important social and environmental stories of our time,” said Participant’s Jonathan King. “Ava DuVernay has shown herself to be highly skilled at bringing intimacy and contemporary urgency to epic events. We have been looking for the right way to get back in business with Ava, and with David Oyelowo, and are proud to reteam with them on her original idea, which we believe will be a powerful film.”

Commented DuVernay, “I’m thrilled to reunite with my Participant family on this project and fortunate to work again with the always exquisite David Oyelowo. The story we’re interested in will explore the complexities of intimate relationships within times of chaos, while also examining the chaos itself. I’m looking forward to the journey.”
