BAFTA Nods Recognize Women Directors and Female Protagonists

After an award season apparently blind to non-acting female talent, we finally got some good news today.

Among the BAFTA nominees are films by several women directors: Clio Barnard’s The Selfish Giant, Haifaa al-Mansour’s Wadjda, Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s Blackfish, and Jennifer Lee’s Frozen.

The Selfish Giant received an Outstanding British Film nod, while Wadjda racked up another award nomination in the best foreign-film category. Blackfish was the only woman-directed documentary (was Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell snubbed?); likewise for Frozen in the animation category.

First-time screenwriter Kelly Marcel (Saving Mr. Banks) and veteran editor Thelma Schoonmaker (The Wolf of Wall Street) were also honored for their work, the former for the general “Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer” prize.

Finally, two female-centric films will contend for Best Film honors (Gravity and Philomena), while Blue is the Warmest Color joins Wadjda among the foreign nominees. Saving Mr. Banks will also compete for the Outstanding British Film prize.

Scroll down for the list of female and female-centric BAFTA nominees:
