BAMcinématek Launches Lynne Ramsay Film Series

Ramsay: Film4/YouTube

Brooklyn’s BAMcinématek is marking the occasion of Lynne Ramsay’s latest offering, “You Were Never Really Here.” The Cannes winner hits U.S. theaters April 6, but you can catch the film’s New York premiere at BAMcinématek on April 2 and writer-director Ramsay will be in attendance for a Q&A. The screening is part of “Tough Love: Cinema by Lynne Ramsay,” a celebration of the Scottish auteur’s works. Other titles being shown include her feature debut, Glasgow-set drama “Ratcatcher,” and Tilda Swinton-starrer “We Need To Talk About Kevin.”

“You Were Never Really Here” made its world premiere at Cannes 2017, where Ramsay was awarded Best Screenplay and star Joaquin Phoenix was named Best Actor. The acclaimed thriller sees Phoenix playing a war vet and former FBI agent who tracks down missing girls.

Ramsay recently spoke out about her reputation for being “difficult.” “You’re doing a tough job, where you’re the captain of the ship, and there’s always tough decisions to make, and sometimes you’ve just got to go, ‘That’s not right for this,’” she said. “You’ve got to stick up for what you believe in. If you don’t do that, you’re doing a disservice to the audience, because you’re making something really diluted. And if you do that when you’re a guy, you’re seen as artistic — ‘difficulty’ is seen as a sign of genius. But it’s not the same for women.”

“Tough Love: Cinema by Lynne Ramsay” runs from April 2–5. Check out all of the titles and the complete schedule over at BAMcinématek’s website.
