The Brooklyn Academy of Music will devote its late February programming to exploring cinema’s witches.
The 18-film "Witches’ Brew" series will span decades, genres and continents in its look at the "empowered, unconstrained womanhood that is the most enduring source of witches’ powerful allure as a proto-feminist icon." The series will kick off with the NY premiere of Robert Eggers’ "The Witch" on February 16 and run through February 29.
"Witches’ Brew" will include historical gems (1922’s "Häxan" and seventies cult classics "Suspiria" and "The Wicker Man"), comedies ("Hocus Pocus," "I Married a Witch"), artsier fare ("Day of Wrath," "Black Sunday") and Hollywood hits ("The Craft," "The Blair Witch Project"). However, only two female filmmakers will be represented: Maya Deren’s "The Witches’ Cradle" and co-director Helena Girón’s ethnographic short "Neither God nor Santa Maria."
You can check out the rest of the "Witches’ Brew" program and get tickets here.
On a side note: None of these films appear to center on a witch of color. Are there any movies featuring witches from minority groups that you’d love to have seen as part of this program?
