Barbara Shearer Directing Ghislaine Maxwell Docuseries for Peacock

"Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell"

Barbara Shearer is bringing the story of alleged Jeffrey Epstein accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell to Peacock. She directed the three-part docuseries “Epstein’s Shadow: Ghislaine Maxwell,” which Variety reports is set to premiere on Peacock June 24. It will debut on Sky in the U.K. June 28.

Maxwell has been accused of trafficking underage girls for Epstein and others. The U.S. federal government charged her with enticement of minors and sex trafficking of underage girls, and she is currently awaiting trial in jail.

Hailing from Blue Ant Studios, “Epstein’s Shadow” will investigate “powerful, connected, and mysterious Ghislaine Maxwell, who was once the heiress to the Maxwell fortune but whose life takes a sordid downturn when she meets Jeffrey Epstein, the serial sex offender,” per its synopsis. The project will feature exclusive interviews, rare footage of the Maxwell family, and previously unseen photos.

Shearer exec produced with Jennifer Harkness, Emma Cooper, Nina Burleigh, Laura Michalchyshyn, and Sam Sniderman.

“This is a story that has stunned the world, and understanding Ghislaine Maxwell is a crucial piece in getting to the truth,” said Blue Ant Studios’ Michalchyshyn and Harkness. “Our hope is that the powerful stories and information uncovered in this series will shed light on who Maxwell is, and help to inform viewers about the events that unfolded leading to her arrest and upcoming trial.”

Shearer added, “There are many unfortunate stories of crimes committed by men against women, but when a woman like Ghislaine Maxwell is accused of this activity, it creates many questions. This series sheds light on Maxwell’s path from her past to the present to unravel the enigma that she is, and takes us from the highest echelons of society to a Brooklyn jail cell awaiting trial while the world watches.”

“Epstein’s Shadow” isn’t the only Maxwell doc on the way. Discovery+ docuseries “Chasing Ghislaine” will bow later this year, as will an Audible podcast of the same name. Erica Gornall is directing Channel 4 feature-length doc “Who is Ghislaine Maxwell?” and podcast “Hunting Ghislaine” is being adapted into a limited series at Eleventh Hour Films.

Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern’s “Surviving Jeffrey Epstein” and Lisa Bryant’s “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich” are among the doc projects that have been made about Epstein. He was awaiting trial for the charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to traffic minors for sex when he died by suicide in August 2019.
