BBC Commissions Series from “Suffragette” Screenwriter Abi Morgan

Emmy winner Abi Morgan is working on a new series for BBC, “The Split.” The project was announced by Charlotte Moore, BBC’s director of content, during a panel discussion at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

The drama centers on female divorce lawyers, and will be exec produced by Jane Featherstone (“Broadchurch”). Morgan won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries, Movie, or Dramatic Special in 2013 for “The Hour,” a BBC2 miniseries set in a BBC newsroom during the Suez Crisis. Her other writing credits include “The Iron Lady,” “Shame,” and “Suffragette.”

Moore also revealed a number of other series in the works at BBC. The Hollywood Reporter writes that “Trust Me” “tells the story of a nurse who loses her job for whistleblowing.” The four-part series hails from Red Production Co., the production company behind Women and Hollywood favorite “Happy Valley.” (If you’re in the market for an atypical crime series with a nuanced female lead, be sure to check it out on Netflix. We can’t get enough of Sergeant Catherine Cawood.)
