Bentonville Film Festival (BFF) has announced its 2020 lineup. Now in its sixth edition, the annual film fest is dedicated to celebrating underrepresented voices in film, entertainment, and media. According to a press release, more than 80 percent of BFF’s feature film showcase is directed by women. BIPOC directors account for 65 percent of the filmmakers, and LGBTQIA+ directors comprise 45 percent.
Slated to take place August 10-16, the seven-day event will include virtual screenings, panel discussions, and special live events.
Oge Egbuonu’s “(In)visible Portraits,” an exploration of the otherizing of Black women in the U.S., will open the fest. Other titles set to screen include Philippa Lowthorpe’s “Misbehaviour” and Cheryl Horner McDonough’s “Parkland Rising.” The former is based on a true story and revisits how activists disrupted the 1970 Miss World competition, and the latter is a doc about the students of Parkland and their efforts to improve gun safety laws.
“BFF’s mission to foster diversity and inclusion across the media landscape stands more important now than ever before as we continue to support filmmakers in a new and creative way,” said Geena Davis, Co-Founder and Chair of Bentonville Film Foundation.”Within the context of a pandemic, and the continued fight for social justice, we renew our deep commitment to underrepresented storytellers around the world.” The Oscar-winning actress emphasized, “This year’s virtual structure presents a unique opportunity that is not lost on us as we use the power of the digital world to share BFF’s messaging to far-reaching global audiences, arguably more than we ever have.”
Wendy Guerrero, President of Programming of Bentonville Film Festival, added, “Our team has worked hard over the past few months to rethink and rebuild our Festival for 2020, always drawing on our mission to champion underrepresented voices, which has grown even more urgent as we continue these challenging circumstances. Our 2020 program is a celebration of art and diversity, perseverance, and talent. The films in this year’s lineup showcase what we’ve known all along: representation in media, means better content for all. We could not be prouder of this incredible slate and of the storytellers that have agreed to present their visions with BFF’s audiences around the world.”
Check out BFF’s 2020 program below. More lineup info, including events and panels, will be announced at a later date.
