“Troop Zero” is breaking new ground. Bert & Bertie’s comedy about a group of misfit scouts will be released worldwide on Amazon Prime Video on January 17, 2020, making it the “first feature title being announced for the Amazon Prime streaming 2020 film slate,” Deadline reports.
Set in 1977 rural Georgia, “Troop Zero” tells the story of a nine-year-old girl (Mckenna Grace, “The Haunting of Hill House”) who is obsessed with space and dreams of making contact with aliens. “When a national competition offers her a chance at her dream, to be recorded on NASA’s Golden Record, she recruits a makeshift troop of Birdie Scouts, forging friendships that last a lifetime and beyond,” the source summarizes.
Viola Davis (“Widows”) and Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) also star. Lucy Alibar (“Beasts of the Southern Wild”) penned the script.
“Troop Zero” made its world premiere at Sundance in January. When we asked Bert & Bertie what they want audiences to think about after seeing the pic, they said, “That however different you feel, there is a place — and people — for you in this universe. We want people, young and old, to know that it’s okay to let your freak flag fly and to celebrate your weird-ass self,” they emphasized.
The UK filmmaking team has already lined up their next project, Elizabeth Taylor biopic “A Special Relationship.” Rachel Weisz will star.
Bert & Bertie made their feature directorial debut with 2016’s “Dance Camp.”
