Ari, Bree, and Hazel’s new lives are just getting started. BET+, BET Networks’ SVOD service, has renewed “First Wives Club” for a second season. Deadline confirmed the news. The comedy was developed by “Girls Trip” co-writer Tracy Oliver.
Inspired by the 1996 feature of the same name starring Diane Keaton, Bette Midler, and Goldie Hawn, the TV show is set in NYC and follows long-time friends Ari (Ryan Michelle Bathe), Bree (Michelle Buteau, “Always Be My Maybe”) and Hazel (Jill Scott, “Black Lightning”), whose bond is strengthened after their marriages break down.
Oliver is a writer on the series and is among its exec producers.
“First Wives Club’s” debut season was composed of nine episodes, all of which were directed by women. Oliver, Stella Meghie (“The Weekend”), Jamie Babbit (“Russian Doll”), Samantha Bailey (“Dear White People”), Anu Valia (“The Other Two”), and Ryan Case (“Divorce”) stepped behind the camera. The latter two directed two eps each.
