Betsy Steinberg has been named the new executive director of Kartemquin Films, an award-winning non-profit documentary production collective.
Steinberg will be following in the footsteps of another female leader: Justine Nagan, who is moving on to the positions of executive producer on the PBS series “POV” and executive director of American Documentary, Inc. (AmDoc).
Chicago-based Kartemquin Films is the company behind Maria Finitzo’s recently released “In the Game” and Joanna Rudnick’s “On Beauty,” as well as the award-winning “Hoop Dreams” and “Life Itself.”
Steinberg most recently served as managing director of the Illinois Film Office. She is credited for creating thousands of jobs during her tenure.
In her new role as executive director, Steinberg will oversee operations at Kartemquin and executive produce all of their films.
“Of all the candidates, Betsy immediately demonstrated the ethics and passion we know Kartemquin needs,” said board chair Jason Stephens, “and we are confident she will lead the staff and filmmakers to meet the challenges ahead while maintaining the values we have represented for five decades.”
