All good things must come to an end: “Better Things” is wrapping up its critically acclaimed, award-winning run. Pamela Adlon, the FX comedy’s co-creator, writer, director, showrunner, star, and exec producer, confirmed that its upcoming fifth season will be its last in a statement to Deadline.
“I will forever be grateful to FX for allowing me to tell stories the way I see the world and want the world to be seen,” Adlon emphasized. “Making this show has been film school for me. I bow down to my crew and my cast. And I can’t wait for people to discover and re-discover ‘Better Things.’ This is gonna be a wrap on Sam Fox (for now). See you at the after party.”
No word on what Adlon may be hinting at with her “for now” reference — it’s possible she’s open to revisiting the character at another time and/or in another medium. Cue the countdown for a “Better Things” movie.
A semi-autobiographical story of an actress and single mom raising three daughters (Mikey Madison, Hannah Riley, and Olivia Edward), “Better Things” premiered in 2016.
Filming for Season 5 is currently underway. Adlon has directed every episode of “Better Things” since its sophomore season.
In addition to winning a Peabody Award, “Better Things'” other honors include two Emmy nominations for Adlon’s acting.
Adlon is under an overall deal with FX Productions that sees her developing new scripted and unscripted programming. No word on any projects she may have in the pipeline.
“Holler” and “Californication” are among Adlon’s other on-screen credits. She’s recently voiced characters in “Archer” and “Tuca & Bertie.”
