HBO’s returning to the skatepark. “Betty,” a comedy about an all-female group of skateboarders, has been renewed for a second season by the premium cable network. Variety confirmed the news.
Based on “Skate Kitchen,” Crystal Moselle’s award-winning 2018 indie pic, “Betty” centers on a diverse group of skaters in New York City determined to get respect in a sexist scene dominated by dudes.
The majority of “Skate Kitchen’s” cast appears in the series, including Rachelle Vinberg, Dede Lovelace, Kabrina Adams, Nina Moran, and Ajani Russell.
“I worked for over a year with a group of real teenage skateboarder girls to create a film that was semi based on their lives,” Moselle told us ahead of “Skate Kitchen’s” Sundance premiere. “I met the characters from the story on the train and became friends with them, and was incredibly inspired to make a film based on their lives.”
Moselle, who made her feature debut with acclaimed doc “The Wolfpack,” created “Betty” and directed all six episodes of its first season. Season 1’s finale aired earlier this month on HBO.
“It’s been a joy to ride through the streets of NYC with the inspiring women of ‘Betty,’ and we’re grateful to them and to Crystal for sharing their stories and friendships with us,” said Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO Programming. We can’t wait to watch where our beloved Bettys go next.”
