Beyoncé was the big winner at last night’s BET Awards, where she was named Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, won Best Collaboration (with husband Jay Z for “Drunk in Love”), and nabbed the audience-chosen FANdemonium Award.
Nicki Minaj grabbed the Best Female Hip Hop Artist trophy and displayed the swagger that got her to the podium by boasting that she writes her own lyrics. Songs from her last album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, made her the most-charted female rapper in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. Minaj also appeared as a season-long guest on American idol and co-starred in The Other Woman.
On the movies side, the BET Awards followed the Oscars in naming 12 Years a Slave Best Movie and in recognizing Lupita Nyong’o’s enormous talent. The future Star Wars co-star won the Best Actress prize.
Serena Williams won the Subway-sponsored Sportswoman of the Year award. She was ranked the number-one player in 2013 by the Women’s Tennis Association for the sixth time since 2002.
