The centerpiece of BFI Southbank’s all-June-long celebration of women in film sounds like it will be one hell of a shindig. The South Bank, London theater is hosting The Woman with a Movie Camera Summit, a day of keynotes, panels, illustrated talks, and more, this Saturday, June 16.
Woman with a Movie Camera will see filmmakers, academics, scholars, activists, writers, critics, artists, and programmers gather to “honor the courageous trailblazers of the past, explore the power and pitfalls of grassroots feminist cinephile activism, champion new voices in criticism and programming, explore movements like #MeToo and #TimesUp, and, above all … celebrate the women who’ve not allowed themselves to be excluded from the room where it all happens.”
Summit events will include a keynote interview with activist and model Munroe Bergdorf, and talks such as “RIP #strongfemalecharacter,” “Blowing Up the Film Canon,” and “STFU.”
The Summit will be followed by a live recording of The Guilty Feminist podcast and a 30th anniversary screening of “Working Girl,” the ’80s classic that follows a secretary (Melanie Griffith) as she works her way up in business, despite the machinations of her saboteur boss (Sigourney Weaver).
You can buy event passes to the Summit and check out the lineup at BFI’s website. Woman with a Movie Camera is general admission, and seats are first come first served.
