Three upcoming women-directed blockbusters have gotten updated release dates in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Theater closures and safety concerns mean that “Mulan,” “Black Widow,” and “Eternals” will be hitting theaters later than initially intended.
Originally slated to open March 27, Niki Caro’s “Mulan” is now slated to open July 24. The live-action Disney pic sees Hua Mulan (Yifei Liu) disguising herself as a man so she can join China’s war against Northern invaders.
“Black Widow” is taking over “Eternals'” old release date, November 6. The Cate Shortland-directed Scarlett Johansson-starrer is set between the events of “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War” and follows Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow as she returns to Russia, her homeland, to handle unfinished business. The Marvel title was set to open May 1.
Marvel’s “Eternals” has been pushed back to 2021. Chloé Zhao’s tale of immortal beings who have lived among humans, shaping Earth’s history and civilizations, will now open on February 12. The film’s star-studded cast includes Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Gemma Chan.
The COVID-19 crisis is, of course, ongoing, so we’ll have to wait and see if “Mulan,” “Black Widow,” and “Eternals” will in fact hit theaters on these revised dates — we may be waiting longer.
