The Women’s Image Network (WIN) has announced the nominations for the 23rd Women’s Image Awards, which “celebrate artists whose work depicts dimensional female media images” as well as “outstanding film and television that also promotes the value of women and girls,” per a press release. As WIN founder and filmmaker Phyllis Stuart says, “We believe women may reach their potential when the media depicts girls and women as complex and ever-evolving human beings.”
The awards include 18 categories across film, television, documentary, animation, and reality programming, spotlighting women directors, performers, producers, and writers. Among this year’s most-nominated projects are “Black Widow,” “Genius: Aretha,” “Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult,” “Mrs. America,” “Respect,” and “I’m Your Woman.”
“Black Widow” and “Respect” are both up for Outstanding Feature Film, as are “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” and “The Dig.” Similarly, “Black Widow’s” Scarlett Johansson, “Respect’s” Jennifer Hudson,” “The Eyes of Tammy Faye’s” Jessica Chastain, and “The Dig’s” Carey Mulligan comprise the Outstanding Actress – Feature Film nominees.
The contenders in the Outstanding Film Directed by a Woman category are Regina King’s “One Night in Miami,” Julia Hart’s “I’m Your Woman,” Freida Lee Mock’s “Ruth: Justice Ginsburg In Her Own Words,” Cecilia Peck’s “Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult,” and Elizabeth Rohm’s “Girl in the Basement.” “Seduced” is also up for Outstanding Documentary alongside “Time,” “Mary J. Blige’s My Life,” “144,” and the “Getting Away With Murders” installment of “Confronting a Serial Killer.”
“Genius: Aretha,” “Mrs. America,” “A Teacher,” “The Girlfriend Experience,” and “Robin Roberts Presents: Mahalia” are nominated for Outstanding Made For Television Movie/Limited Series. “Genius” and “Mrs. America” also nabbed nods for Outstanding Actress – Made For Television Movie/Limited Series (Cynthia Erivo and Cate Blanchett, respectively) and Outstanding Show Produced by a Woman. The latter picked up an Outstanding Film or Show Written by a Woman (Sharon Hoffman) nomination and two Outstanding Show Directed by a Woman (Janicza Bravo, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre) nods.
Also on the TV side, the Outstanding Drama Series race includes “Pose,” “The Wilds,” “The Spanish Princess,” “Good Trouble,” and “Power Book II: Ghost.” The Outstanding Comedy Series nominees are “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist,” “The Bold Type,” “Run the World,” “Home Economics,” and “Blindspotting.”
