I thought we should take a look at some numbers from this past weekend since we haven’t done that for a while.

First — looks like Mel Gibson has not been forgiven. The Beaver grossed only $107,000 in 22 theatres this weekend. Jodie Foster’s mega press lap could not get people into theatres. People just didn’t want to see him playing a depressed executive. It didn’t matter that the trailers made it look like a comedy. Mel still has a lot of work to do to redeem his image. I really hope that this doesn’t effect Jodie’s ability to direct more films because her directing was quite good.

Something Borrowed made a little over $13 million and even though that is a soft number, producer Molly Smith who developed this film with her partner Hilary Swank thinks that they might have a chance to make the sequel Something Blue.

I hereby request that you focus your energies and money of something else than another vehicle for Kate Hudson to malign the entire female species. Even though Kate Hudson has a crappy track record of late (has she even been in a box office hit?) she will still keep on getting these roles because as a studio executive said yesterday to the LA Times: “She’s got a big smile, she lights up the screen, and audiences still like that.” I’m wondering which audiences like her smile. My guess is that she still passes the fuckability factor — meaning that the male executives can see themselves sleeping with her — so she gets these crappy parts. But this won’t last forever and if she wants to have a long career she needs to step out of her comfort zone which is clearly not working.

And to top it off that film cost $35 million. What a waste of money.

Speaking of money, Elizabeth Hunter and Arlene Gibbs wrote Jumping the Broom and that film was made for $7 million and came in ahead of Something Borrowed with a gross of over $15 million. The film features an African American cast and women made up 70% of the audience and the film was marketed at the faith based audience. And another note on the faith based audiences, Soul Surfer continues to play. The gross is now up to $36 million on an $18 million budget.
