Sick and tired of seeing one-dimensional female characters on-screen, four British comedy writers/performers have joined forces to launch Double Yay Productions. The company seeks to address the lack of roles for actresses, Deadline reports. Led by Caroline Amer, Natalie Bray, Rebecca Tanwen Morgan, and Isobel Hughes, Double Yay will produce funny and feminist comedy series for linear and digital platforms.
The foursome emphasized that women in the industry are constantly being told that they are “bitchy or competitive” — but these are lies “created to stall us from realizing the truth and taking over the world,” they said.
Double Yay is currently in production on seven-part digital series “Nutritiously Nicola!” The show was produced after the group raised over £16,000 ($23,000 USD) via Kickstarter. “Nutritiously Nicola!” centers on “a not-so-healthy health food blogger slash spinning instructor living in East London who wants to become a global brand,” the source summarizes. Each episode is about 10 minutes long and stars include “Poldark’s” Heida Reed and “Kingsman: Secret Service’s” Fiona Hampton.
“We make comedy that’s not just for comedy’s sake,” said Bray, Producer and Creative Director at Double Yay. “Our work features female leads who are kind of heroines — they may be messed up heroines, but they’re heroines you know. They’re a bit like us; a bit like you. It may be comedy about women, but it’s something that everyone will find funny. There is a serious undertone in our work — what we would call aggressive heart. Our work has a British sensibility with global appeal.”
Check out a teaser for “Nutritiously Nicola!” below. The spot sees Nicola buying a small dog to attract social media followers, learning to look at fruit as if it’s the most hilarious thing she’s ever seen, and donning a “healthy bitch” apron.
