British MP Jess Phillips’ Book “Everywoman” Will Be Adapted for TV

Jess Phillips is about to have her “Shrill” moment. The self-described “gobby MP,” who “has a tendency to shout about the stuff I care about,” will have her story told on TV. Deadline confirms the outspoken politician’s book, “Everywoman: One Woman’s Truth About Speaking the Truth,” is being adapted as a television drama by Red Production Company (“Happy Valley”).

Published in 2017, “Everywoman” is a collection of stories from Phillips’ life. Among other topics, the tome covers the rape threats she’s received on Twitter as a public critic of Brexit — and as a woman who dares speak her mind.

“Because I’m a woman with a cause, I have been called a feminazi witch, a murderer, and threatened with rape. The internet attracts a classy crowd,” the Labour MP writes. “So, speaking the truth isn’t always easy but I believe it’s worth it. And I want you to believe it too.”

Red will co-produce the “Everywoman” TV project with Lucy Dyke (“The Split”).

“I’m utterly thrilled to be working with Red, a company based outside of London led by Nicola Shindler, and with Lucy Dyke co-producing,” Phillips said. “They make the kind of television that truly represents people and events as they are and that was deeply important to me. The story of women in politics is complex and nuanced and intriguing, and it’s a story that needs telling.”

“Jess is an inspirational woman who fights for what she believes in and isn’t afraid to be honest and outspoken. Using her book as a source, we’re excited to create a drama that explores how an engaged woman can make a difference in today’s very complicated world,” agreed Shindler, CEO of Red.
