Last year, director Haifaa Al-Mansour made history with Wadjda, the first female-directed film to be shot in Saudi Arabia.

The tiny nation of Brunei, which borders Malaysia, is poised to release its own first film from a woman director. Siti Kamaluddin’s coming-of-age drama Yasmine, which focuses on a girl (Liyana Yus) who fights to become a Silat (Southeast Asian martial arts) champion despite her single father’s opposition, will be the first commercial film to come out of the primarily Muslim nation.

Kamaluddin noted, “This is the first time you see Silat in a sports angle for competition. Sometimes you go into something for all the wrong reasons and find something else. [The character Yasmine initially learns Silat to impress a crush.] The film is about a journey of self-discovery and a reminder that some dreams are worth fighting for.”

She added, “It’s also the first time you are seeing [contemporary] Brunei on film.”

According to some reports, Yasmine will be the first film to made in Brunei in half a century.

No release date has yet been set.
