Bryce Dallas Howard to Make Feature Directorial Debut with “Sorta Like a Rock Star”

Bryce Dallas Howard in “Black Mirror”: Netflix

Bryce Dallas Howard is stepping behind the camera again. The Golden Globe-nominated actress has signed on to make her feature directorial debut with an adaptation of Matthew Quick’s novel “Sorta Like a Rock Star,” Variety reports. The “Jurassic World” star has previously helmed a number of shorts.

Published in 2010, the book follows Amber Appleston, a high school senior and a self-professed “princess of hope” who secretly lives in Hello Yellow, the school bus her mom drives. Ol Parker (“The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”) penned the script.

“The film is currently in early development and without a distributor,” the source writes, but if it moves forward, Howard will be on board to direct.

The project’s producers include Ellen Goldsmith-Vein (“The Maze Runner”).

“I think that in a way — and ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is an incredible example of this — people are seeing that there is a kind of lower tolerance for vapid, meaningless, only functional female characters,” Howard has said. “We want the real world and the realities of the real world reflected in movies that we see, and audiences are not tolerating anything other than that. I think it’s a good time to be a woman in this business and people are more outspoken. I have a lot of respect for the women that have been more outspoken and have had courage in that regard,” she explained.

“Solemates,” “When You Find Me,” and “Orchids” are among the shorts Howard has helmed. Her acting credits include “The Help,” the “Twilight” franchise, and “Terminator Salvation.” She received a Golden Globe nod in 2008 for her role in “As You Like It,” a TV movie inspired by William Shakespeare’s play.
