Cancelled 2020 SFFILM Festival’s Program Included Films from 73 Women Directors

The program include the world premiere of "The Iron Hammer"

SFFILM has announced the complete 2020 San Francisco International Film Festival. Originally scheduled to take place April 8-21, the fest is not going on as planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, the fest wanted to spread the word about the titles it chose to screen because its team “feel strongly about each of these films and filmmakers,” SFFILM Director of Programming Rachel Rosen said. “We’ve been working for months to assemble a lineup that would delight our audiences, and we’re proud of this slate of world-class films. We will be seeking ways to continue to champion all of them as they continue their journeys throughout the rest of 2020 and into the future,” she emphasized.

The 63rd edition of the fest boasted 154 films and 73 women directors and co-directors. Forty-five countries were to be represented.

SFFILM Executive Director Anne Lai suggested that the fest is looking for alternative ways to celebrate these films and others. “While we are heartbroken that we are unable to hold the Festival itself, we are planning new ways to keep our audiences entertained, inspired, and engaged with each other,” she explained. “We look forward to sharing ideas on how to stay involved in film culture in the coming weeks.”

Two of four features slated to make their world premiere at the fest were helmed by women: Joan Chen’s “The Iron Hammer” and Abby Ginzberg’s “Truth to Power: Barbara Lee Speaks for Me.” The former is a portrait of “Jenny” Lang Ping, a history-making Chinese volleyball player, and the latter a tribute to a U.S. Congress Representative Barbara Lee. Both are documentaries.

Other titles that were set to screen included “Lucky Chan-sil,” Kim Cho-hee’s story about a suddenly out of work producer who lands a job as an assistant to an actress, and “The Last Autumn,” Yrsa Roca Fannberg’s doc about a wife and husband who tend a sheep farm on the remote Icelandic coast.
