Cannes 2017: Salma Hayek, Robin Wright, and More to Participate in Women in Motion Talks

Salma Hayek Pinault in “Bystander Revolution”

Women-directed films are — once again — scarcely represented in Cannes’ Competition lineup, but fortunately Kering’s third annual Women in Motion program promises to initiate and continue conversations about gender inequality in the film industry. This year’s Women in Motion program will include talks with Salma Hayek Pinault, Robin Wright, and Isabelle Huppert.

These award-winning A-listers will “share their experiences and viewpoints regarding the representation and contribution of women in cinema,” a press release from Women in Motion promises.

While they are best known for their work on camera, both Pinault Hayek and Wright have multiple producing and directing credits. Wright helmed a short film screening at Cannes this year. The “House of Cards” actress and director will debut “The Dark of Night.”

Hayek Pinault has participated in the Women in Motion program every year since it launched. Her husband, François-Henri Pinault, is the CEO of Kering. At Cannes 2015 the “Frida” star said, “Women don’t have enough voice and we can’t express who we are. We need to see ourselves.” Alas, we’re still waiting for that to happen.

As previously reported, Huppert will also receive the 2017 Women in Motion Award. As part of the honor, the “Elle” star had the opportunity to select the recipient of the annual Young Talents Award. She chose writer-director Maysaloun Hamoud ( “In Between”), who will receive €50,000 (about $54,800 USD) to help finance future projects.

The Women in Motion events are open to journalists and film professionals. If you aren’t in town for Cannes, you can watch the talks live on Kering’s Facebook Page.

Wright will give the first talk on May 18. Check out the full lineup and schedule for the program below.
