Eva Vives’ feature directorial debut has found a home. The Orchard snagged North American distribution rights to Mary Elizabeth Winstead-starrer “All About Nina” at Cannes. Variety broke the news. The dark comedy about a stand-up comedian made its world premiere at Tribeca last month to positive reviews, with many critics singling out Winstead’s performance. Common (“The Chi”), Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”), and Beau Bridges (“Bloodline”) co-star.
The pic sees Winstead playing a woman struggling to be as truthful in her personal life as she is on-stage delivering jokes.
“After years of living this story, I finally decided to make a film out of it,” said Vives. “I am so excited and proud that a company with a track record and taste as exquisite as The Orchard will help me put it out in the world. Working with Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Common was a dream come true. I hope you laugh as much as I did making this film.”
Paul Davidson, EVP of Film and TV for The Orchard added, “’All About Nina’ is a rare film in its honesty and its comedy, which is clearly a testament to Eva and Mary’s tireless work in bringing this story to the screen. We know audiences will fall for this film and we are excited to take this journey with them and a team of producers for whom we have the greatest respect and admiration.”
“I’m a female, Spanish, first-time filmmaker telling a tonally tricky, personal, ‘female’ story. No matter how many times women turn films into hits, they are still seen as ‘difficult’ for audiences,” Vives told us. “So yeah, finding money [to make the film] and keeping it was not easy.”
“Five Feet High and Rising,” a short Vives cast, edited, and produced, won Best Short at Sundance and Cannes in 2000. She wrote and directed “Join the Club,” a short that screened at Sundance in 2016.
Winstead’s credits include “Fargo,” “10 Cloverfield Lane,” and “Smashed.”
