Isabel Coixet has yet another project in the pipeline. According to Variety, the Spanish filmmaker is in pre-production on “It Snows in Benidorm” (“Nieva en Benidorm”). Details were revealed at Cannes.
Slated to begin filming in November, the Spanish and English-language feature is described as “a quirky thriller set in the kitschy Spanish seaside resort ‘packed with Blackpool hooligans, retirees, smugglers, Elvis impersonators, and excess, where anything is possible.'” The story centers on a middle-aged man looking for his missing brother.
Coixet won three Goya Awards, Spain’s counterpart to the Oscars, for her last feature, 2017 Emily Mortimer-starrer “The Bookshop.” She premiered a new film at this year’s Berlinale, “Elisa and Marcela,” a drama about Spain’s first lesbian marriage. No word on when the pic will arrive stateside. Coixet is also writing and directing “Foodie Love,” her first TV series. The HBO Europe project tells the story of a couple who meet via an app for foodies.
“Learning to Drive,” “Elegy,” and “The Secret Life of Words” are among Coixet’s films.
