“Destroyer” left a major mark at Cannes. The upcoming Nicole Kidman-starrer inspired an “all night” auction at the fest, according to Deadline. Annapurna Pictures ultimately snagged U.S. rights to the Karyn Kusama-directed crime thriller in what’s reportedly a seven-figure deal “for U.S only with a significant release commitment taking [the] total pact to eight figures.” Amazon and NEON were said to be among those battling it out for the title.
The pic sees Kidman playing an LAPD detective “who, as a young cop, was placed undercover with a gang in the California desert with tragic results,” the source summarizes. ” When the leader of that gang re-emerges many years later, she must work her way back through the remaining members and into her own history with them to finally reckon with the demons that destroyed her past.”
Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Sebastian Stan (“I, Tonya,” “Avengers: Infinity War”) co-star.
“Destroyer” is currently in post-production.
Kidman is set to reprise her Emmy-winning role as Celeste in the sophomore season of “Big Little Lies.” No word on when the murder mystery will return to HBO. Filming kicked off in March. Her other upcoming projects include a film adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s new novelĀ “The Female Persuasion,” and Rebecca Miller’s “She Came to Me,” a comedic drama set in the world of contemporary art.
In 2003 Kidman won an Oscar for her role in “The Hours.” She’s also received nods for “Lion,” “Rabbit Hole,” and “Moulin Rouge!” “The Beguiled,” “Top of the Lake,” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” are among her recent credits.
Kusama’s been busy on the small screen, directing episodes of shows such as “Halt and Catch Fire,” “Billions,” and “The Man in the High Castle.” Her feature credits include “The Invitation,” “Jennifer’s Body,” and “Girlfight.”
